Old Crow Medicine Show - Mar 18, 2010

Jesse has been wanting to see Old Crow Medicine Show for years. On more than one occasion he was planning to travel down to the States to see them (Bonnaroo and Merlefest). Who would have guessed it? We're on the other side of the world and who comes to town? OCMS!!!

The opening act was a local NZ band called The Eastern. They had a great sound and put on a lively show. Their singer reminded us a lot of Ryan!

OCMS didn't disappoint either. They put on a great performance. They didn't have quite as much energy as we expected, but it was their first show of the tour and may have been feeling some jet lag... They played a long set, jam-packed with great songs. Here's the setlist I jotted down during the show.

1. Union Maid
2. Down Home Girl
3. Poor Man
4. Johnny Get Your Gun
5. Raise a Ruckus
6. Next Go Round
7. Highway Halo
8. Instrumental ...Didn't know the name...
9. Hard To Love (Have Video)
10. Trouble That I'm In
11. I Hear Them All
12. Caroline
13. Tear It Down
14. Shortnin' Bread
15. Alabama High Test
16. Let It Alone
17. Ruby Ridge
18. Crazy Eyes
19. Big Time in the Jungle
20. Minglewood Blues
21. Mary's Kitchen
22. Soul Rebel (Bob Marley Cover)
23. Hard To Tell (Guitarist broke a string but they played on well enough)
24. CC Rider
25. Wagon Wheel
26. Tell It To Me

Intermission / Encore

27. Who's Been Here Since I Been Gone (A Capella Version)
28. Fall On My Knees

I didn't realize how much space the videos would take up on my camera. I quickly filled up the memory card with the songs early in the set and couldn't be bothered to sort through them and delete any while the show was still going. The result was that I missed filming my favourite songs and didn't have space for many pictures. Oh well, it gave me more time to enjoy the show rather than fiddle around with the camera.

I really wanted to follow them on to a couple more shows (maybe Hamilton and Wellington) but in the end the combination of having no money, no car and needing to take time off work persuaded me to stay in Auckland, haha.

Here's a song I never heard them play before the show, Shortnin' Bread:
